saggar/barrel/pittfire

Saggar Firing: Earthy Elegance

Saggar firing produces a color palette reminiscent of the natural beauty of the earth. This alternative firing technique is often conducted outdoors—in a pit, barrel, or gas kiln. The process involves encasing the ceramic pieces in aluminum foil, a slab of clay, or a ceramic container to create a protective chamber.

The resulting coloration is achieved through the addition of oxides, salts, organic materials, wood, and ash. These elements interact during the firing process to produce unique and organic patterns.

After firing, the pieces are cleaned and finished with a wax polish, such as a blend of beeswax and linseed oil, to enhance their natural beauty and provide a subtle sheen.
